My grandfather always loved and talked about the flamingo. They are such bold, beautiful birds. When you see hundreds of them standing together, it is quite a remarkable site. I love the flamingo because they are such flamboyant birds. I love how bold and bright the pink is in some of the birds, yet soft and subdued against their white feathers in other birds.

I painted this painting for a gentleman who commissioned me to paint a flamingo for the center piece of a room in his house that is dedicated to flamingos. I enjoy flamingos and to have a bird this bold and colorful is fabulous.

My inspiration for this painting came from an abused lion named Duke. Upon hearing Duke’s story, I visited this abused lion. I returned to my studio and spent the next two hundred hours completing this painting. In contemplating the composition of the painting, I felt that the head of the lion with his long, flowing main is one of the most powerful identities in nature. When I thought of the strength and courage of the abused lion, I decided the head and the main of Duke would be the predominant focal point and composition of the painting.

I titled this painting “Pride of the Plains” because lions are such powerful and noble symbols of nature. In addition, I find it proper that
several lions together are referred to as a pride.

I have always been intrigued with these beautiful, striking animals.
To imagine an animal in nature covered with black, white, and brown stripes is humorous to me. Rather, it reminds me of something an artist
would create in his studio. Any artist would be so proud to be the creator of such a work of art, that is as unique, creative, and visually appealing
as the zebra. And to think the zebra and his stripes have not only been beautifully designed, but they serve as a valuable function in his survival.
What a wonderful masterpiece God created in the magnificent zebra!

I chose the background and composition of this painting, because I wanted a black and white background that contrasted with the zebra’s stripes.
Also, the background of this painting reflects the energy in life, in which I love to express in my art. This energy of life even reflects in the title of
the painting.

What many people refer to as black panthers, are actually black leopards. The black leopard’s fur is actually created by a recessive gene. Instead of the leopard just having black spots, the entire coat is black. The spots can still be seen when the sunlight glistens off of their fur.

One of the reasons why I enjoy watching these animals is because when the sun reflects off of their coat, a rainbow of color is reflected back to your eye. This makes these animals quite dynamic. Yet when they are lurking in shadows, while stalking their pray, their black fur makes them almost impossible to see. This is trouble for their prey, because these animals are lighting fast.

Naturally, pandas are one of the earth’s most popular animals. They receive more publicity than almost any other animal, because of their adorable black and white faces. This love and admiration for the panda has transcended from generations and through continents.

Artistically, pandas define contrast in composition with their black and white fur, while their patches surrounding their eyes tug on the emotions of any animal lover.

The hippo is an unusual, exquisite animal. The enormous size and girth of this animal is as magnificent as is the rich color of the hippo. I felt this animal would give me the opportunity to capture the beauty of nature, while expressing my own love and appreciation for color and for the hippo. The ear on this particular hippo has been damaged from a fight with another hippo. I decided to paint the ear torn, to reflect more of a natural lifestyle of wild hippos, than creating a perfect portrait of the animal.
